Write for the journal
The staff is made up of students enrolled in the Science Journalism DeCal, which runs each semester. Writers, interviewers, research editors, copy editors, and designers all join this way.

Contribute to the blog
You do not need to be enrolled in the DeCal to write for the blog. Email bsj.berkeley@gmail.com with what you would like to write about.

Submit your research
Undergraduate research is accepted year-round and reviewed by faculty before publication. The requirements are below.
Undergraduate research submissions
What we accept, and how to prepare it.
Berkeley Scientific Journal publishes materials only by UC Berkeley undergraduates, or recent BA/BS recipients from UC Berkeley within one year of graduation.

Send your forms
Complete a Submission Eligibility Form and a PI Release Form and send both to research.bsj@gmail.com.

List references at the end of the paper in the order they appear. Refer to them in the text by number in parentheses — not in superscript.
- Journal article

- Book

Manuscript requirements
- Heading
- Author names, research sponsor (PI), and your major, year, and the department the research was done in — followed by a list of keywords.
- Type
- Palatino or Times New Roman, 12 point.
- Length
- Double spaced, 8–14 pages, excluding figures.
- Structure
- Title · Abstract (150 words maximum) · Introduction · Materials and Methods · Results · Discussion · Conclusion · References · Acknowledgments (50 words maximum, including funding source).
- Figures
- Ten figures and charts at most, placed in the document you upload, at the highest resolution you have. Accepted papers are asked for 300+ dpi images afterwards, as separate files.
- Tables and graphs
- Also placed in the document. Accepted papers are asked for them as Word or Excel files — not scans.
- Figure legends
- Numbered to match, at the end of the paper's text.
